The Benefits of Music in the Early Years

Young children love music and at Fiddlesticks, so do we! Growing up in a household that embraces listening, creating, singing and dancing freely with music provides so many benefits to a child, creating valuable connections and memories as a family.

Music is one of the few activities that use both sides of the brain (logical and creative). Listening to music and giving children the opportunity to create and build their musicianship skills provides amazing benefits to their physical, emotional, social and cognitive development whilst still having fun-the best way to learn!

Music helps multiple areas in early childhood development. We know that it can help language through repetition, vocal exploration and rhythms naturally created by simple songs and rhymes. Auditory perception, which is the brain decoding what it is hearing through the ears, is another key area. It is important for distinguishing sounds for reading, spelling and writing. Musical activities also help to stimulate the areas of the brain responsible for maths, critical and analytical thinking.

Music is especially valuable for preschool children in leading up to school readiness as it helps with social and emotional intelligence, gross and fine skills, self-expression, mental health and independent self-regulation skills. It helps the body and the mind work together and is a beautiful way for you to connect with your child.
